The Challenge
The International Tobacco Control (ITC) Policy Evaluation Project is a world-leading research initiative evaluating tobacco control policies across more than 30 countries. Its work informs governments, public health organizations, and international agencies worldwide.
As the scale and influence of ITC’s research grew, the challenge was to communicate complex, data-intensive findings clearly and consistently across countries, audiences, and formats — while maintaining scientific credibility and supporting real-world policy decision-making.
The opportunity was to design a cohesive, scalable communications system capable of translating global research into materials that policymakers and stakeholders could understand, trust, and use to inform policy decisions.
The Approach
Sentrik has partnered with ITC since 2008, working closely with leadership and dissemination teams to support the organization’s evolving communication needs.
Rather than approaching each publication as a standalone design, Sentrik developed a system-led approach — creating a flexible visual framework that could be applied consistently across national reports, infographics, and supporting materials.
Design decisions focused on hierarchy, clarity, and pacing, ensuring dense research content could be navigated efficiently by time-constrained policy audiences. The system was designed to work across print, digital, and web formats, while supporting translation, localization, and long-term use across ITC’s global network.
The Solution
A standardized global research communications system designed for clarity, consistency, and scale.
Key elements include:
- A flexible report design system used across 30+ countries
- Clear typographic hierarchy optimized for long-form research reading
- Custom data visualizations supporting interpretation of complex findings
- Consistent layout structures adaptable to multiple languages
- Visual rhythm and pacing to guide readers through dense content
- A cohesive design language reinforcing ITC’s credibility and authority
This system allows ITC to publish efficiently while maintaining a consistent, professional presence across all research outputs.
The Outcome
The ITC communications system continues to support the organization’s role as a global leader in tobacco control research.
- Nearly 100 research and knowledge-translation materials produced
- Improved clarity and accessibility of complex research findings
- Strong consistency across international publications
- Materials referenced by governments, global health agencies, and media
- Long-term efficiency and scalability across ITC’s global network
The system enables ITC’s research to move beyond publication — supporting understanding, discussion, and evidence-based policy decisions worldwide.
Ongoing Creative Partnership
Sentrik continues to support ITC as a long-term creative partner, collaborating on research publications, infographics, and communication materials as the project evolves.
This sustained partnership ensures consistency, accuracy, and clarity as new findings emerge and global research priorities shift.
Testimonial
“Sentrik has been the creative partner behind nearly 100 of our global research and policy communications materials. Their ability to translate complex findings into clear, credible communication has been transformative for how our research is understood and used by policymakers worldwide.”
